Chrysler Repair: 89 Dynasty A604: no reverse gear., dodge dynasty, mechanical cluster

Question
QUESTION: MR FINSTON,  MY PLEASURE TO HAVE FOUND THE MAN !   MY QUESTION MAY HAVE BEEN ANSWERED AFTER REVIEWING SOME OF YOUR PAST ANSWERS .  HAD A BLIND DATE WITH CHRYSLERS A604/41TE TRANSAXLE, MY 1989 DODGE DYNASTY, AND DID I LEARN ALOT !!!  REPLACED ALL SENSORS, SWITCHES, CONTROL SOLONOID, UPGRADE,  ATF+4 FLUID, FILTER ETC., ETC.,  HAD LIMP MODE ISSUE, SHUDDER, BUT I GOT THRU THAT.  ODOMETER DOES NOT WORK,  HEARD YOU MENTIONED THE DISTANCE SENSOR, COULD BE PROBLEM ?  I REPLACED THAT, EARLIER, DID NOT KNOW AT TIME IT ALSO DEALT W/ODOMETER. MAYBE ITS MY WIRING ?  REPLACED MY RELAYS TO CONTROL UNIT ON FENDER . REPLACED GROUND CABLES TO ALTERNATOR, ENGINE, ETC., HEARD THAT COULD CAUSE ISSUES.  BUT I THINK ALL WIRES TO TRANSAXLE AND CONTROL UNIT COULD NOW BE SUSPECT !  ONE COLD MORNING ,I JUMPED INTO CAR, RAN TO WORK, IT WENT INTO LIMP MODE .  SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON , WAS OK AFTER WORK, LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED. I CAN'T SEEM TO LOCATE ANY WIRE DIAGRAMS FOR THIS TRANSAXLE, CAN YOU HELP ME OUT ?  I WANT TO KNOW WHAT WIRE GOES WHERE, COLOR, ETC., I'M A AVID REPAIR PERSON W/45 YEARS EXPERIENCE AUTO, I RUN HEAVY EQUIPMENT,BACKHOE, DETAIL IS PARAMOUNT, I ANALYZE,REBUILD, MOVE ON.  AND I CAN APPRECIATE PEOPLE OF YOUR GOOD QUALITIES !!!  ANY ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATIONS OF MY SITUATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED !

ANSWER: Hi Ken,
On the recent limp mode experience, I would wait for a recurrence when you can try for a fault codes rather than to try a diagnose it when it is functioning normally.
On the odometer not working, I assume this is a convention mechanical cluster, not an electronic digital cluster, correct?
While there is an output speed sensor I believe that is mainly for the functional control of the transmission. Because that was very early in the history of the A604 I believe that the speedo/odo is driven by a distance sensor on the transaxle extention, and that must be OK if the speedo is working.
If so, and the speedometer is working but not the odometer, then I would believe that the problem is inside the speedometer/odometer unit proper. The odometer is driven by a couple of plastic gears and those are likely to fail sooner or later. Usually the 20-tooth gear is the one that fails. This happened on my '89 Lebaron a while ago. You can get the gear at a speedometer repair shop for around $20. The instructions on how to replace it are very well described in a posting at the Yahoo Group in the Autos category called The Chrysler Lebaron Club and the specific posting is #33980*. Take your time when you are opening up the speedo/odo unit and just go far enough to be able to remove and replace the specific 20-tooth gear. I didn't completely separate the subunits, but just opened things up enough to remove the gear and put in the new one, using a tweezers as I recall.

QUESTION: time: 3:52 pm, date: 04/25/13,   roland, just lost reverse after backing down driveway.  30 minute drive from work, 1989 dodge dynasty,a604 transaxle,  have not had a problem since I last spoke w/you., replaced all speed sensors, etc., etc., first thing I will check is fluid level, no leaks found, seen, or otherwise noticed. I will say one thing, when starting engine, I can hear what sounds like a broken washing machine, amplifided when parked along side a wall.  but vehicle performs well, until today, when I got home from work.  after backing up, down the driveway, then pulling up towards garage, put into reverse to better position the car, NO REVERSE !   WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ?

Answer
Hi Ken,
I sent an answer but it may have been deleted. Basically either the trans controller fault code readout via the 4 pin black plug to the right of the steering column using a Chrysler DRB-II or Snap-on equivalent diagnostic box would shed some light, or you could measure the pressure of the trans fluid using the third port of seven such ports located under the solenoid pack on the side of the transmission. In reverse, with the engine revved to 1500 rpm the pressure should be 165 to 235 lbs. or that pressure circuit is faulty.
Please 'rate/nominate' my answer again as you have done heretofore, if you would be so kind.
