Chrysler Repair: dodge neon 98 manual trans, metal washers, clutch cable

Question
QUESTION: I have a bad clutch cable.  I have taken the old one out and have installed the new one up to the point of seating the end of the cable with the 2 metal washers and the rubber washer.  My question is exactly how to position that end on the fork.  I could not tell how the old one was positioned because that the end that broke and it was just laying there luckely, except for the rubber washer which is somewhere in casing.  I hope I'm clear on my question.

ANSWER: Hi Bob,
Based on one illustration in the '97 shop manual I have it appears that the rubber washer should be positioned between the metal washers at the end of the cable so as to protect both surfaces of the rubber wash from mechanical damage.

QUESTION: Hello Roland:
Yes thats right because thats the way the clutch cable comes assembled. When I referred to the missing rubber washer, I was referring to the old cable which was missing it and that it probably fell into clutch casing.

My real question was how to position the new one (end we are referring too) on the shifting fork inside the clutch casing.

Answer
Hi Bob,
The figure shows there to be some sort of a cover on the case at that point which has been removed. There is a slot in the case into which the cable can be slid and then the cable end slipped over the end of the lever which similarly has a slot for the cable. Do you have the cover removed? If you pull the housing of the cable assembly rearward it will expose sufficient cable to complete the attachment of the tip of the cable to the release lever. The attachment at the other end involves an automatic adjuster. I can xerox copy and postal mail you the pages that show and describe the process.
