Chrysler Repair: hard shifting: 99 Cirrus, chrysler cirrus, diagnostic capability

Question
Hello, I have a 1999 Chrysler Cirrus. It has been shifting hard between second and third gear. My question is why is it doing this and how might i fix it.

Answer
Hi William,
The electronically controlled transaxle has self-diagnostic capability which can be accessed by means of a fault code reader that is plugged into a socket located under the dash by the steering column. A nationwide parts store, such as Autozone, will often do a free readout of your transmission contoller's memory for such a code number. Ask for the code number, what it means, and what is suggested as the result. Then let me know and we can compare notes with the manual. If there is no such store near you then an independent garage should do the readout for $40 or less. Knowing the code number will tell us the possible causes and solutions.
