Chrysler Repair: Transmission 1998 Town and Country, transmission control module, autoparts store

Question
Why won't the transmission come out of low gear?  I have replaced both speed sensors and automatic transmission control module. These were temporary fixes (no longer than a week) and the problem returns. Would appreciate any advise...Thanks

Wendy

Answer
Hi Wendy,
The transmission is actually in 2nd gear which is called 'limp-in mode' and is designed to avoid any unnecessary damage while you sort out the cause of the problem. It is a built-in strategy that is taken when the controller as noticed a problem.
There are many possible causes and the best way to get an idea of what the problem is would be to get a fault code readout of the memory of the control module. A nationwide autoparts store, such as Autozone, will usually do a readout for free or an independent shop would do it for under $40. Ask for the 4-digit fault code number(s), what they mean, and what they recommend doing. Then send me the results in a follow-up question and we can compare what you were told with what the manual says.
