Chrysler Repair: transmission solenoid, definitive proof, transmission controller

Question
I think your answer regarding replacement of the transmission solenoid in the 2000 T&C is exactly what my 96 T&C needs even though mechanics say I need the whole tranny. (No electronic diagnostic has been performed - would this be definitive proof of the need to replace the whole transmission?) The car will drive forward in first (has to be set to first manually or it will fail to go at all after about 15 mph) and it will not go in reverse although it didn't go at all until we restarted the engine. This is already the 3rd transmission and I'd like to try the solenoid 1st. Do your instructions apply to the 96 model and could you give just a little more description of where this part is located?

Answer
Hi Nancy,
I would try to get a fault code readout of the transmission controller memory for fault codes using a plug-in code reader. A nationwide auto parts store, such as Autozone, may do it for free, or an independent shop should do it for $40 or less. I would buy no parts or do any labor to repair the trans without first getting the fault codes.
RolandPS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it had been refered by Kevin.
Please 'rate' my answer, and where you  see the question about a nomination of me to be 'volunteer of the month' consider a 'yes' response. Thank you
