Chrysler Repair: 88 New Yorker 2.2L Turbo no electronic cluster display, yellow trace, cigar lighter

Question
QUESTION: I have checked some of your posts with this problem. Electronic cluster has been taken out of vehicle.

13 pin connector does have voltage on pin 1 ( red) but no voltage on pin 6 (dark blue trace)when ignition is on.

21 pin plug does have voltage on pin 10 (red) but no voltage on pin3 (orange) or pin 15 ( yellow trace) when Headlights are turned on.

Headlight switch has been replaced.

Cigarette lighter plug has blown fuses -- kid put ipod in lighter socket, anything on this fuse socket that can be causing the problem?

Do you have electric schematic showing where the voltage is supposed to be coming from for the pins showing no reading?

Also the electronic voice alert has not been working -- it works on rare occasions-- are the two problems related?

ANSWER: Hi Ed,
The dark blue trace is shown to be on pin 3 rather than 6, and it is a fuel monitor signal, probably digital that comes from the ecm pin 36

The pin 3 (orange) is supposed to get power from the headlamp variable brightness coupled thru fuse #12 (3 amp), and the headlamp switch gets power for variable brightness from fuse 5 (20 amp) so either of those fuses could be bad or it could be the headlamp switch. The yellow on pin 15 is similarly powered.

The cigar lighter is powered out of fuse 7 (20 amp).

Make sure the fuses are powered and if not, then check for a blown gray color fusible link at the battery.

The electronic voice is another whole set of possibilities we can deal with next.

QUESTION: One of your previous postings said the 13 pin connector pin6 (dark blue trace wire) should have 12v on it when the ignition switch is in the run position? Is this not correct?  Should there then be 12V going to a pin on the 13 pin connector when the ignition switch is on?

As far as the 21 pin connector pin3 getting voltage from fuse #12, fuse 12 is blank and not connected in the car. There is a fuse #13 ( 5Amp) connected. The car is in the shop so I can't look at it. I do remember there was also another blank fuse spot. I think that may be fuse 5!!
If that's the case, they've got to be getting the power from somewhere.

Everything was working fine a couple of days ago!
Any easy way to trace pins 3 & 15 back?  Are those wires supposed to be going directly to the fuse block?

New headlight swich was installed today, but it made no difference.
Headlights do work.

Does the fuseable link at the battery affect the entire fuse block or just certain fuses..

Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Only pin 1 on the 13-pin should show a power supply sort of 12v, the others are from various sensors, but it would take me a while to tell you what those wires should show.
I don't understand how fuse 12 is blank becauae it powers a lot of things including the cluster.
Fuse 5 is also supposed to be in use.
Pin 3 goes to fuse 12, and fuse 12 goes to the headlamp switch pin I on a tan wire. Pin 15 goes to a 2-pin plug at the headlamp switch on a yellow wire.
The fusible link powers fuses 5,6,7,and 8.

QUESTION: The headlight switch must be working because the variable brightness control works on the radio (brights and dims the lamps on the radio) yet pin 3 on the 21 pin connector (orange) shows no voltage. Is there a seperate pin that controls just the display on the cluster ( on either the 13 or 21 pin connector?
One of your previous postings said there is a self diagnostic test for the cluster itelf ?

I'll re-check those fuses again tomorrow morning..
If there is anything else I need to check please let me know.

I really appreciate your prompt replies...
Thanks--

Answer
Hi Ed,
The orange wire for all the dimable lights come from a common splice so you are correct. Either the splice is bad or the wire has a break in it between the splice and the cluster plug pin 3 0f the 21 pin plug. The splice is slightly to the left of center behind the dash.
The variable dimming yellow wire on pin 15 comes also from the headlamp switch, and it has a splice hidden behind the cluster in a fairly fat harness that is supported by brackets on either side of the cluster opening. It would appear that your problem is not the cluster but rather the lack of voltage on those two pins.

PPS It seems strange that both of those wires are cold. Could the ground wire be loose? It is pin 6 on the 21 pin plug
