Chrysler Repair: 1994 Town and Country Van, throttle position sensor, crankshaft position sensor

Question
Hi Russell
I bought this van used 7 years ago and have had very few problems with it. Yesterday as I was driving across the continent for the 7th time with this vehicle it just stopped running while I was cruising along at 55 mph.  It just shut right down.  I pulled to the side of the road and started the van again.  It fired right up but when I put it in gear to go forward or backward it just dies again.  Repair person has replaced the fuel filter and did a pressure check for the fule pump which indicates that that part is fine.  We are currently looking at the throttle positioning sensor and a sensor attached to the transmission.
Can you advise?  This is very perplexing and is getting too expensive to continue to troubleshoot.  Am I going in the right direction.  The van idols very smoothly so I do not think it is the timing belt.

Answer
For now I'll assume that the sensor on the transmission you are refering to is the Crankshaft Position Sensor. If that sensor fails it will stop the engine from running, and that would be my first guess without knowing what, if and, codes were registered in the engine controller. A failing or failed Throttle position sensor will not cause the engine to stall like yours did. I'd also have the shop check the A/C Pressure Transducer. They have been known to cause the condition you have from time to time.
