Chrysler Repair: 00 minivan rear drum brake: removal of drum, star wheel, wd 40

Question
Need to repair rear drum brake system. Can not slide drums off. Is there a self adjuster mechanism on these brakes? Only the emergency brake cable is visible thru the small view hole. How do I release the brake shoes, in order to remove the drums?

Answer
Hi John,
Using the '98 manual as reference, it is suggested that you go to the parking brake equalizer and release the cable for the parking brake at the wheel you are working on. That will then allow you access to the self-adjuster once that cable is slacked.  Then remove the rubber plug of the adjuster slot. Then with a thin screwdriver lift up the lever that holds the star wheel in place, then with another tool rotate the star wheel downward to back off the brake shoe adjustment so that it clears the drum surface. That may be what is preventing the removal.
If that is not the reason, then the drum and hub may be rusted together which you can clear by spraying some penertrating oil or WD-40 at the inner hole of the drum where it allows that inter- face to be accessed. Allow the oil time to work then attempt to brake the rust connecting the two parts.
I hope this works for you.
Roland
