Chrysler Repair: TRANSMISSION CONTROL SOLENOID: code 0760, chrysler sebring coupe, solenoid pack

Question
Roland,
I have a 1998 Chrysler Sebring coupe LXI that is stuck in second gear (fail safe mode). I do have codes P0760 and P0700. My question is, can I install the Transmission control solenoid without much trouble. I would consider myself a little above an average backyard mechanic. Also, this problem started the very same day my son left his oil cap off and oil got all over his engine. Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
The solenoid pack/pressure switch assembly can be removed and replaced without a great degree of skills or tools. It is hidden under the sound deadening box on the side of the trans facing the front of the car. You would need to remove whatever components are in the way of getting to box.
Then remove and cap the oil cooler lines. Disconnect and remove the input speed sensor. Remove the plug to the assemably. Then remove the sound cover. Then remove the three bolts that hold the assembly in place (behind the assembly, oriented vertically) and remove the assembly. Take care to not allow dirt to enter the ports in the case that are located below the assembly. Then install the rebuilt assembly. Torque the 3 bolts to 110 inch-pounds. Torque the speed sensor about the same as a spark plug (20 foot-pounds).
Just in case this could be an electrical problem I would test the light green/red wire between pin 8 of the assembly pack and the trans control module pin 20 to be sure it isn't flakey.
Also check the wires from pins 13 and 17 of the tcm to ground for continuity.
If those seem solid, then go ahead with the pack replacement as there are no other possible causes of the 0760 code.
