Chrysler Repair: transmission problem. 2001 T&C limited, solenoid pack, transmission control module

Question
Transmission won"t shift . Runs god up to 40 mph at about 3K rpm.
It wnot shift up. Reverse works fine. Scanner shows "transmission control solenoid error". I serviced transmission last week. The pan magnet was full with debri. The tech says he can replace the solenoid but there could be damged to the tran as well. One more thing. Sometimes when I shift from park to drive the engine dies. After a couple of times , everything works again for the rest of the day.

Answer
Hi Juan,
The reason it won't shift is because there is some sort of a fault that has been recognized by the transmission control module (the code in the scanner describes it) and so to avoid any further damage it cuts off the electrical power to the solenoid 'pack' which means it will only run in 2nd gear and reverse until the problem is solved. It might be a problem that a new solenoid pack will solve, and that would avoid having to remove and rebuild the transmission.
As to what the scanner showed, that is not a typical code. There is more detail than just the phrase 'transmission control solenoid error'. Try this with the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window in the cluster to see if the mileage reading changes to show any 4-digit numbers preceded by a P. Tell me what those are and we'll go from there with what are the possible solutions.
I must say though that modest debris is normal, but if there was more than just on the magnet it may mean that wear and tear has gone too far to avoid a rebuild. But let us see what the code says the specific problem is.
