Chrysler Repair: 2001 chrysler sebring 2dr coupe lxi 3.0L, negative battery cable, chrysler sebring

Question
the starter gave up the ghost on me today. have the negative battery cable disconnected, removed the oil filter and the heat shield, have disconnected the lines going to the starter. easily removed the lower bolt on the starter, a 14mm bolt. From feeling up to the top bolt, it is slightly recessed behind the starter solenoid. i could not get a socket on it for nothing, could not see it, nor was i sure what size it was for that matter. From looking at the new starter the top hole is threaded. Could the bolt be coming in from the other side of the starter, am i  just over looking it? Do i need to drop the exhaust to be able to get to the bolt? I did look through the Chrysler repair questions before posting, but did not find anything about the starter for the 3.0L.

Answer
Hi Steven,
Unfortunately the closest manual that I have for the coupe is a 2000 model year and that one shows only the procedure for changing out the starter on the 2.5L V-6 engine. However it does show that the front exhaust pipe on that engine should be removed in order to take out the starter motor. I wish I had an '01 manual to refer to. On the 2.5L the bolts are shown as being inserted from the transmission side of the interface and there are two of them. The torque setting is 20-25 foot-pounds when tightening.
Are you sure it is a 3.0L engine? I was not aware that engine was used this late in the 'game'. In the '95 manual for the 3.0L used in the vans and the sedans it shows there to be three bolts attaching the starter motor, and again all are inserted from the transmission side. But maybe that is not the case in your '01 coupe?
