Chrysler Repair: 1996 sebring wont start, fuel pressure gauge, pint jar

Hi Russel, I have a 1996 sebring cont, I ran fine yesterday 4-9-2011 then today it rained alot but the car was in my garage( which leaks)  it turns over and I think I hear the  fuel pump but it doesnt sound the  same as it used to , the gas tank is all wet and there is a smell of gas. I checked all fuses all they are ok.. please help,   thank you

Sorry for the delay, somehow I skipped over your message. Since you suspect the fuel pump is not operating correctly you should check the fuel system. You may have nothing more than an obstructed fuel filter or perhaps failing fuel pump. If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge attach it to the fuel system and check the pressure and flow, the pressure should be in the neighborhood of 49 PSI and the flow should fill a pint jar in a few seconds, with no water or other gunk in the container. You could also try smacking the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet or a good sized piece of wood to wake the pump up.
