Chrysler Repair: 2002 t/c air conditioner compressor rattle noise, air conditioner compressor, noise question

Question
QUESTION: hi i have a 2002 t/c ex with the 3.8. i have a rattle noise that sounds like it is coming from the compressor. it is loudest when i have the defrost on it turn to vent or feet setting it is not as loud.i have been told it is the compressor, is this true or other problem thanks for any help

ANSWER: Hi Tom,
I suspect the issue is the compressor if you are not specifically using the a/c to cool the cabin in this cold weather the time of the year. When you use the deftrost the a/c compressor is called into action as cooled air is better able to remove condensation from the windshield. So open the hood and listed when you have the defrost requested and compare to when you don't. And see if it localizes to the compressor area on the engine.

QUESTION: the noise is lesser when i move the control to feet or vents. i tried this several times and it is always louder on defrost. is there other parts that should be replaced when i have the compressor replaced. thanks

Answer
Hi Tom,
The compressor won't work on feet or vents unless you also have asked for a/c by pushing the button for that. It is only on defrost that the compressor is called into play no matter whether you have asked for heat, and of course it will be on when you have requested a/c. I would not necessarily just replace the compressor but rather ask the ac shop to diagnose the noise to be sure that it is just the compressor, or perhaps something other than that.
