Question
QUESTION: Hi Roland,

I am continuing from here: http://www.allexperts.com/user.cgi?m=11&catID=807&expID=63082&qID=4964828

I think we got a 12 fault code because, we tried to start the car yesterday by changing the battery.

Today I took the car out for a drive and it stopped again. I immediately noted the fault codes. Here they are: 12, 54, 55.

The car didn't start again, initially even when giving a jump. Then the other guy tried grounding the condenser which goes to the distributor cap and it started.

Also I wanted to inform you that yesterday morning when I tried unsuccessfully to get the car started, I noticed that there was no spark on the spark plug.

Please Help.

ANSWER: Hi Murali,
Based upon the 54 code I believe your problem is the Hall effect dual sensor disc in the distributor. That code says the signal for the cam sensor is bad, which would cause the spark to stop/fuel pump to stop running, etc. So try replacing that sensor and see if it solves your problem. I don't knot what condenser you speak of is, but it may just have been a co-incidence that the sensor recovered at that time.

QUESTION: Hi Roland,

I had been making enquiries about the hall effect sensor/cam sensor yesterday. There seems to be a slight misunderstanding, some stores are directing me towards the distributor pickup coil and others towards a cam shaft sensor. Are these both the same thing with different names? They look similar over the web.

Answer
Hi Murali,
Yes the sensor might be called a pick up coil and it is located in the distributor. It actually is one unit with two plugs, one sensor times the spark, the other the location of the cylinder. Because the distributor is driven by the camshaft it could also be called the cam sensor though now days that is actually a sensor that is reading the camshaft position directly.
