Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Voyager usage of the battery current, chrysler voyager, hours battery

Question
QUESTION: Hello Roland,
I have Chrysler Voyager diesel 2.8l. Last November I have replaced my old battery with new one, 71Ah. After few weeks I had trouble with starting my car in the morning or after few days of inactivity.
Usually I'm doing about 17 miles per day. Today I had a chance to check my circuits with multimeter. It shows about 0.0095A with all devices onboard off. I have removed all fuses one by one, but the reading was always the same. My question is: is it normal for this car to have such current flow (immobiliser??) or I have something definitely wrong in my car.

ANSWER: Hi Arek,
An ignition off draw of 9.5 mA doesn't seem too high. The investigation point to check for an excess draw is 25 mA accoding to the '02 minivan manual. The current is drawn by the control modules to maintain their memory values and for the immobilizer to remain on duty. I can also check the '04-06 manuals if that would be closer to your year model. The down-time limit after which you would want to disconnect the battery is nominally 3 weeks.

QUESTION: Hello again,
Thank you very much for your answer,
I have 2004 diesel, automatic transmission. I'm at the point that the battery is faulty, probably. After overnight charging I have fit the battery into the car. I could start the engine in the morning, drove about 8 miles and after 5-6 hours battery was flat again. I have checked the voltage with running engine, it is about 14.7V, which means the dynamo is charging the battery. So either the stater uses enourmous power to  start the engine, or battery hasn't got enough capacity. The battery is 72Ah, on the tests it showed 68% of capacity.
With kind regards
Arek

Answer
Hi Arek,
I would suggest taking the battery back to the vendor and get a replacement under warranty. Most battery warranties allow for full exchange during the first year of use. You have checked the ignition off draw and it is as expected, and generator is running at the proper voltage, so I would believe there is a problem with the battery. It is true that diesel engines have high compression so it may be the case that the cold cranking current of the battery that was sold to you is marginal compared to what is needed.
