Chrysler Repair: code P1391 on 1996 caravan 3.0L, camshaft sensor, pulley bolt

Question
After I changed the crankshaft sensor. My 1996 caravan 3.0L is still running rough, no power. How can I check that the camshaft sensor is bad?  The camshaft sensor is in the distributor and very pricey.  I can not buy the sensor only.  Please help.

Thanks

Poot

Answer
Hi Poot,
I don't have the '96 manual but rather a '95 and a '98 manual which have different distributors. If the distributor has 3 wires then it is like the '98, if 4 like the '95. Let us assume it is like the '98. You can check the sensor by putting a voltmeter between the tan/yellow and the black/light blue wire (which you can access at the plug or at pins 33 and 43 of the powertrain controller plugs. If you turn the ignition switch to the run position and then rotate the crankshaft by hand using a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt you would expect to see a voltage signal that oscillates between 5v and 0.3v several times per revolution.
You might want to check it cold and when the engine is hot as temperature can cause the sensor to degrade or fail, then recover when cooled down.
