Chrysler Repair: Chrysler LHS A/C problem, chrysler lhs, diagnostic capability

Question
My grandmother has a 1999 Chrysler LHS, fully loaded with 70,000 miles.  She spent a ton of money on the A/C this past year and it went out again.  Now the dealer says it is the computer that is bad and will cost around $1800!  She is fed up and wants to sell the car.  Is that the real price of the computer?  If so, can one be found cheaper anywhere?  What should she do?   Thanks.  Kevin

Answer
Hi Kevin,
I doubt that the body control module costs that much. In any case it is possible to get one from a wreck that is compatible so long as it is a similar model year and equipment. But before concluding that is the case you can do some testing of the unit using its built-in diagnostic capability to see if the dealer is telling you the truth. I need to know whether the control panel has a digital temperature readout or not as the test procedures are different for the two types (automatic temp control or manual temp control are the types).
Write back and tell me which she has and what specifically are the problems and I'll tell you how to run the diagnostics.
