Chrysler Repair: 00 town and country: trans slipping, rpma, transmission controller

Question
QUESTION: 3 days ago my car began making a high pitched whining sound once in a while only when i accelerated.  the next day it did it every time I accelerated, and now it does it whenever I put my foot on the gas.  Also, now that it has progressed, if I try to speed up to fast the rpma just go up and i dont accelerate at all.  I tried getting on the hwy yesterday and it took a long time to get up to 50 and I couldnt maintain the speed without the rpms going to 4-5k

ANSWER: Hi Chris,
I would check the fluid level in the trans via its dipstick, and if needed only add ATF +4. Other wise try a code readout using the ignition switch: 'on-off-on-off-on and leave on', doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch to odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show 4 digit code numbers preceded by a P. Let me know them. If none appear then go to an Autozone parts store for a free code readout using a plug-in reader and let me know what they find. That is the most efficient way to start to get a handle on this situation

QUESTION: the readout was p1684- battery and p0700- trans?  so... I have scheduled an appt at a local transmission place hoping they can fix it without a rebuild, or should i take it to a dealer who works on other things too?

Answer
Hi Chris,
I would go to an Autozone or similar nationwide store where they do a free readout with a plug-in code reader because there is another specific transmission code in the memory of the transmission controller you can get that way, and then you will have a better idea of what is the specific problem and the possible fixes. If there is no nationwide parts store you can go to then an independent shop should do the readout for $40 or less. Then ask what the number means and how much it will cost. Then write back and we can compare notes. It is always good to know what the self-diagnosis is before you get to a decision point involving transmissions.
I would not go to a dealer or a nationwide transmission place because you may be pressured to put in a rebuilt transmission which might not be necessary. But I leave it to you to decide how to go forward. That is my best advice.
