Chrysler Repair: 96 Sebring 2.5 V-6: Wont Start / No Spark from Wires, diagnostic capability, screw driver

Question
Hi there.

I have a 1996 Sebring Convertible - V6 2.5 L. I was merging onto the highway and acclerating at a fast sprint when my engine just quit... Pulled over to the side of the road and tried to restart - wouldnt restart...

I thought it was the timing belt but its okay... The car won't start, it just keeps cranking and cranking - will not turn over... Seems like its getting gas because the fuel pump is working fine, I her it come on for 2-3 seconds when I turn the ignition on.

I am not getting any spark from the wires... I took the wire off, put a screw driver in and tried to get spark off the engine body while cranking it - no spark at all...

Do you think it might be a module or a coil? I've exhausted my expertise now.

Thanks very much, I really appreciate your help!

Answer
Hi Bret,
There is a self-diagnostic capability you can access with your ignition switch. Turn the key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the 'check engine' light, which remains 'on', to see if begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure you have an accurate set of flash counts. Group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the 2-digit fault code numbers. The last number is always 55 because it means 'end of readout'. The earlier numbers will tell us why you don't have spark. The most likely are 11- which means the crank position sensor has failed, and 54- which means the cam sensor in the distributor has failed. Let me know what you get and we'll go from there.
