Answer
Hi Uta,
The most direct approach to diagnosis would be to take advantage of the ability of the abs system to detect its own problems. You do that by plugging a fault code reader into the socket under the dash near the steering column and ask it to readout the fault codes from the anti-lock brake controller. Such a code may tell you exactly what is wrong and allow the most economical solution. Some nationwide auto parts stores, such as Autozone, will do a free readout or an independent shop will do it for under $40. But the device used to do the readout must be able to interact with the anti-lock brake controller so if you don't get a code then it probably is not a good enough code reader to do the communication task. Ask for the four digit code number(s) and what is the name associated with that code. Then let me and you mechanic know and we'll go from there to see what the manual says is the response to that specific fault code.
