Chrysler Repair: 2002 Ram 2500 4WD issue

Question
I have an 02 Ram 2500 4x4 5.9L v8 auto trans.  The other day I needed to use the 4WD (don't use it often) I went to pull back the lever into 4H and it barely moved, I then tried to push it into 4L same thing, barely moved.  I tried a few times to go forward and backward with he lever, on the last pull back the linkage popped off b/c the lever freely goes back and forth with no resistance.  I'm sure I can figure out how to put the linkage back onto the lever my question is what caused it to be frozen and not shift into 4H or 4L and how can it be fixed?  Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Mike,
I checked an '04 Dodge Repair CD and find that there is a Ram truck manual on it with a section of the 'transfer cases' of which there are 5 different possible types for the truck. If you would look on the rear of it, near the fill plug, there is a round tag that says what the model # is. Let me know that and I should be able to pick out some pages that might get you started. I can copy those and send via emai. Use the 'private' option of the follow-up question to tell me the model number and also what your email address is (the site asks you for it, but the 'expert' doesn't see that info).
