Chrysler Repair: 2006 Sebring cruise control problem?, cruise cruise, cruise control

Question
Hi Roland,
I have a 2006 sebring sedan 2.4L. For about 3 years the check engine light would randomly come on and I could not set the cruise (cruise on/off works)until it would go off, approx. 1 week later. Never had the code read because it never caused any other issue. Recently was traveling and got on the highway check engine light came on only this time I could not accelerate quickly (engine would surge)pulled over and slowly accelerated on shoulder to exit. (note: cruise light on dash wouldn't turn on this time) Stopped and disconnected neg. batt. cable, reconnected
to reset computer everything worked for another 300 mi then happened again, repeated steps and got home (another 200)
very scary cause you have to be where you can pull over quick. Could it be connected to cruise? waiting for it to happen again to get code read had it checked today and no codes(p.s. can I unplug cruise?)
Thanks, Rob (very desperate)

Answer
Hi Rob,
I would doubt that the cruise control can cause a loss of ability to accelerate, so I would bother unplugging it.
I am surprised there were no codes if you had the check engine light come on recently, unless by chance you have a flaky ignition switch which is briefly disconnecting one of the several ignition-related circuits while you are driving. Whenever a valid check engine light comes on there should be some sort of a code. So do wait until this happens again, try jiggling the ignition switch, and if that doesn't seem to be the cause, then go for a code readout. Let me know the 4-digit code(s) that readout and we'll go from there.
