Chrysler Repair: Car will not move when put in D or R, solenoid pack, torque converter

Question
I have a 1997 Town and Country. It started stalling when I came to a stop and the gears engaged. It will not move now, it shuts off as soon as you put it in gear. I am told it is the transmission. I had transmission flush and a leak fixed a few months prior to this and now the fluid is brownish instead of red.

Answer
Hi Octavio,
That sounds like the torque converter lock-up clutch is stuck in the locked-up position. The torque converter is normally unlocked when you put it in gear but when the vehicle reaches about 40 mph it is locked together to increase the fuel economy. It is supposed to unlock when you slow below 35 mph. So it is now like you are trying to start the engine when you have the car in gear but with the clutch released when you have a stick shift car.
The t/c clutch is operated by the fluid and that fluid is controlled by the pump and the valve body/solenoid pack. There is a  't/c off' valve in the valve body that controls the fluid to the clutch. That valve might be stuck. The body/pack can be serviced without removing the transmission, if that is the fault, and not the t/c clutch itself. But it might be the clutch itself is the problem and that would require removal of the trans to fix.
So I would talk to a few transmission shops to see whether they would advise trying to clean the valve body/pack or go directly to a rebuild. I would hope there is a chance that cleaning will do the job. The valve body is removed via dropping the pan.
On the fluid being brown, I wonder what type of fluid was used recently as it shouldn't have changed color so quickly (assuming it was red before the drain). It was supposed to be ATF +4 type, and if not that type, then whoever did the job would be liable for the consequent damage. So check the repair bill to see what type was used if that is shown. You could talk about that issue with other repair shops, also. That change of color would normally show some sort of damage has occured if the fluid was ATF +4.
Good luck on getting it fixed without having to rebuild it entirely.
