Chrysler Repair: 2000 Chrysler Voyager 2.5TD, chrysler voyager, fuse box

Question
QUESTION: Hi I have a problem with the lights on my Voyager. The headlights only work dipped if I have the main beam switch on. As soon as main beam is turned off I only have sidelights and no headlights. Can you help? Plus the air con is on all the time and will not turn off could this be related? Do you think it could be one of the five pin relays not working?

ANSWER: I have a number of difficulties in answering your question. First, I don't have a 2000 manual for export vehicles. Second I am not familiar with the lighting systems required in England compare to that of the US. If you mean by the main beam switch the one mounted in the instrument panel, then that one usually is set up for there being a first step for sidelights, and then the second set turns on the headlamps. The Bright vs the 'Dipped' headlamps are selected via a lever on the steering column which is part of the multi-function switch (turn signals/wipers/high-low headlamps). Does your multi-function switch include the headlamp brightness choice?
And as regards the 'air con', do you mean the blower is on all the time, and if so at what speed? Or do you mean you can control the blower but that the air is always cold (and the compressor on the engine is always running), or hot or what?
I believe that your '00 model may be wired identically as a US '99 or even a '98 model for which I do have the manual. One way to know would be to ask if you have a fuse box in the cabin, under the instrument panel? In '01 US models that was no longer the case, but I don't know which type was exported as an '00.

QUESTION: Hi thank you. I have main beam but I do not have dipped beam. The multi-function switch (the stalk on steering column)does not have brightness choice, we have brightness choice and headlight adjust switches on the instrument panel, next to the light switch on the instrument panel. Yes we do have a fuse box under the instrument panel and there is also a fuse box under the bonnet. I have checked all the fuses all ok? Not sure if relevant but when I turn the ignition off and press the button to release the key, the radio, windscreen wipers (if on) and the cigar lighter remain on could that be part of the electrical problem? The blower can be controlled but when on the air conditioning is on continually.

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
I don't have diagrams for your lights system but based upon the design in that time-frame I would believe that either the brightness adjust switch has some dirty/corroded contacts (which you might cure by gaining access to the switch and using some circuit board contact cleaner with a straw applicator, available at electronics supply store) which can possibly be saved by spraying cleaner into the interior of the switch through any cracks or holes. Another possibility is that both high beam filaments are burned out in your headlamps and that could be checked with a continuity testor or ohm meter looking into both of the bulbs (it does happen!).
On the radio and cigar lighter, that would make me think that the 'accessory' position of the ignition key is being accessed when turn it to the off position even though you haven't actually turned it that far. Try not turning fully to the lock position and pull the key when it will release and see if that circumvents those two item. On the wipers, there is a wiper on-off relay in the power box under the bonnet which may be stuck 'on'. So look for that (possibly the third from the rear in the middle row) and try switching out with another relay with the same part number to see if that stops that problem (choose a non-essential relay to test this theory).
Finally on the ac won't turn off problem I would suspect that the ac on/off switch is stuck in the 'on' position and may need to be opened to release the contact points which may be melted together. That is the only basis for why it would be on all the time (unless you also find that you can't choose how the air is to be distributed and you find you are always sending cold air to the windshield primarily in which case I would suspect that the air distribution switch is falsely sending the 'word' that you have asked for defrost mode (which always energizes the compressor). So check whether you can or can't direct the cold air to different places.
