Chrysler Repair: relays making noises, engine controller, auto shut down

Question
99 ply voyager mini van 3.3 auto tran -- auto shut-down relay making noises after engine is off. It drained the batt. down. I swapped the relay and the other relay does the same thing. The engine will start only if i pull the relay out and wait 5 sec. and it quits making a noise. What do i need to look at next.

Answer
Hi Robert,
The actuation coil pins 86 and 85 (the "front" and back" pins of the socker) control the switching power from the battery (on pin 86) and the engine controller grounds pins 85 when it is supposed to (and that is click). So either the wire on pin 85 (dark blue/yellow) is intermittently shorted to ground or the engine controller is doing it erroneously by itself. You could check pin 85 to see if it is shorting to ground as I say (measure with an ohmmeter) and then unplug the engine contoller and try the same measurement. If it stops shorting to ground, then it is the controller that is faulty; if it continues to short to ground it is the wire between the 85 relay socket and pin 67 on the controller where it is connected that is shorting due to a break in the insulation.
