Chrysler Repair: 94 LHS: cluster doesnt operate at first, electronic circuit board, key cylinder

Question
most of the time when we start the car the none of the gages work (tach, speed odom, gas gage etc). We turn it off and turn on ignition until oil light appear, then we go ahead and start. Is there a accessory on this model? Ignition has 4 forward positions none backwards

Answer
Hi Sam,
There are five internal switch wipers in the ignition switch, four of which supply 12V. One of them, on the red/white wire power the fuse #17 in the box behind the left end-cap of the dash. So when you have the situation that you describe check to see whether that fuse is 'hot'. If not then I would spray the inside of the ignition switch through any openings/cracks with electronic circuit board cleaner from a spray can with straw applicator. Remove the screw that holds the tilt lever, then the lever, then the upper and lower steering column covers to reach the switch.  That #17 fuse provides power to the cluster and the body computer.
By the way there is one 'back' position of the switch to run only 'accessories' but it may require more twisting strength/indentation to reach it. See if the position is shown on the ring surrounding the key cylinder.
