Chrysler Repair: No Starter/starter relay?: Cirrus/Stratus 95-on, solenoid switch, electrical accesories

Question
My 95 chrysler cirrus 2.5L v6 will not turn over. All electrical accesories work, but when the key is turned nothing. I removed and tested the starter and battery, both are good. After reinstalling the starter the car ran fine for 3 days. Now it is dead again. A friend mentioned the starter relay. Is this a likely problem? If so, where exactly will it be located? Thanks for any help, Tom

But this is outside of my expertise.

Answer
Hi Tom,
The starter relay is in the rear section of the power distribution box under the hood. The box is long and narrow, and the rear section is down a level and hidden from view by the air intake tubing. There are four relays, the starter would be the front one on the driver side. Check to listen/feel for a click when a helper tries the key.
If it clicks, then check the brown wire at the starter motor solenoid to see if it shows 12V when the relay clicks. If not, then that wire is 'open' or the relay points are oxidized. You can check the continuity of the wire from the driver side pin of the relay socket to the solenoid switch. Also check that the wire is not grounded due to a break/melt of the insulation. Make sure that the passenger side pin of the relay socket shows 12V at all times which from fuse 8 in the box.
If it doesn't click, then check fuse 8 and that the front pin of the relay socket shows 12v from the ignition switch when a helper puts the key in start position. Finally make sure that the rear pin of the socket is shorted to ground when you have the shift lever in P of N position. If those check out, then try switching the starter relay with one of the relays in the rear of the box if they have the same part number. Those are the fan relays so the car should still start if you switch out either one of them.
