Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 94 mercury sable, mercury sable, inline switch

Question
Hi,  Got the heatercore in okay, replaced the thermostat with a cheap aftermarket one and run a grounding wire from the core to the frame.  It now takes the heat a while to come in, car idling about 2000 rpm, it blows hot, but when I slow down then it gets cooler.  From previous posts I bet I put the wrong thermostat in, it has also overheated, I added more antifreeze, seem to fix this.  Guess it pays to use Dealer parts on some things...  (Like the heater core) Also, there is this inline switch tube thing that goes into the inlet side of the heater core.  I've found out Ford does not have these in its parts warehouse any more.  What is its function?  Does disconnecting it make any difference?
Thanks for the schematic on the blender door.
One last question, what sort of transmission service should I do?  Car has 143000 and I am afraid to flush it because of what you've said to other folks in previous posts..  It shifts okay, just clunks into reverse, slight delay from 1 to 2, but other than that, its good..
Thanks again for you help..

Answer
Hi Brian,

Yeah, that transmission was the second most common one we worked on in it's day. Sounds like its getting tired. There is no additive or fluid change that will help. In fact, just today, I had a customer call me that was having issues with an Explorer. She told me it was shifting late so yesterday she went and had the fluid changed. She said it seemed to help but wanted us to take a look. She called me 20 minutes later asking me to send a tow truck because the Explorer now won't move. I see this everyday. That tube thing may be a temp sensor of some kind. I will look into it more tomorrow and post a follow up.
