Chrysler Repair: transmission stuck in 2nd/no odometer action., neutral safety switch, shift problem

Question
QUESTION: hi thanks for the great work youre doing. i have a 98 town & country thats stuck in 2nd gear, and my odometer stopped working. i had an electrician check it out he said it could be the neutral safety switch. could this be my problem and could i change it myself?

ANSWER: Hi Naz,
The odometer (and I presume the speedometer?) are both driven by the output speed sensor, located on the front side of the trans at the far end of the powertrain (there is an input speed sensor near to the vertical shift rod, so don't mistake that for the output sensor). That failing would also cause a transmission inability to shift gears properly for lack of the sensor output. So start with replacing that sensor if you find nothing wrong with its wiring harness. Simply lift the tab on the plug to release it, then unscrew the sensor and put in a new one. Tighten it to about the same as a spark plug (20 ft-lbs).

QUESTION: Thank you for your advice but I already changed the output sensor and the problem remains. But could this also cause the shift problem??

Answer
If the sensor was changed properly, then you would have both speedometer and odometer working.
Does the speedometer work? If yes, then the output sensor is probably working and connected properly. If not, then the sensor harness may be open or shorted. If you don't have speedometer then that would likely explain why you aren't sifting. Why not get a fault code readout, for free at an Autozone parts store and let me know the 4-digit codes that they find. That should be a good clue as to the condition you have which is called limp mode, when the trans will only run in 2nd gear. That happens when there is a fault that would otherwise cause more damage if allowed to continue to drive in all gears. The only other reason for limp is a failure of the transmission control relay, located in the power box under the hood. You could try switch it with anonther relay that has the same part number as a test of that possibility. Otherwise, get any fault codes and we'll go from there.
