Chrysler Repair: Transmission fault code P1736, variable resistor, inner fender

Question
QUESTION: I am looking for a 2002 dodge intrepid Transmission schematic with wiring. it throws a 700 code and when you let off the gas too fast (all at once) it downshits and wonts shift back untill you shut it down and restart if you drive it like grandmom it doe s it a whole lot less? I was wondering it it has some sort of sensor for the thottle posi that is related to the trans. Also where caan i find the transmissin controller?

Answer   Hi Jack,
The trans controller may be an integral part of the powertrain controller in your '02 (the '04 manual shows a combined unit with 4 38-pin plugs on the left inner fender). If that is not what you see then the '99 manual shows a separate trans unit just in front of the powertrain controller in the same general area on that left inner fender (it would have a single 60-pin plug if that were the case).
If you let me know which you have I can copy the wiring diagram from the appropriate manual. It is about 8 pages and I will send it to you. I would appreciate your sending me back three 44-cent stamps to cover my costs after you get the pages.
As I said earlier, you really need to get a separate code for the specific problem that is causing this behavior. Once you have that we can speak of specific parts to assess. There are 150 pages about the transmission so I would need to select those related to the actual problem. The throttle has a positions sensor mounted in the throttle body which is used for controlling the mixture and other systems and it might have a discontinuity it its variable resistor. You could check that by measuring the resistance between the center pin and either outer pin of its socket while changing the throttle position.

IT HAS FOUR PLUGS ON IT

ANSWER: Then that is a combined engine/transmission controller.

QUESTION: Ok I did that but they don't know what the code is. the code it shows now is P1736 do you have a way of finding out what that code is?

ANSWER: Hi Jack,
I don't find a code 1736; code it instead be 0736 or 1738 or ?

QUESTION: nope it's 1736 for sure

Answer
Hi Jack
A Google search reveals it means 2nd gear ratio error or 2nd gear switch circuit malfunction. For lack of a specific trouble shoot for that about all one could do is try replacing the solenoid/pressure switch assembly which is mounted on the side of the tranmission and you can do yourself. Other than that it would be an internal rebuild sort of repair which is to be avoided if at all possible.
