Chrysler Repair: Getting key into the accessory position, durango 4x4, dodge dealer

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a used 2001 durango 4x4.  Only has one key to it.  All positions on ignition work without problem except I can't seem to put it key in the ACC position.  Any ideas? Is there a trick or some kind of saftey pertaining to the "lock" position? Since I had the car for a month I remember having it in ACC just once. I could not get a reply from the Dodge expert. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Max
That position typically has a fairly strong spring so you may have to twist a little harder. Also rotate the steering wheel back and forth in case that locking mechanism is the hang up. Also there is usually a lever next to the key that gets you into the lock position, so try using that too when you try to go further to the accessory position. You might want to get another key before trying so in case you break it off you won't be stuck without a key. Other than that, I know of no other cause for this.

Answer
Hi Max,
Most locksmiths can cut keys for vehicles sold in the U.S. so check around for the best price.
You will notice a code number on each of your keys, if they are original, and that number is used by a dealer in the case that you lose all your keys. So I would suggest that you write down those code numbers both in your manual and in your house in case you loose all your keys sometime in the future.
