Chrysler Repair: No RPM signal: Diesel 2.5L, chrysler grand voyager, crank pulley

Question
Hi, i have a Chrysler grand voyager 2.5 td T reg  manual. Ive had a new crank shaft sensor fitted but now the car WONT start and it,s saying there is no RPM signal found, wiv no fuel going to the injectors. Can you help PLEASE

Answer
Hi Adam,
The crank sensor is what provides the rpm signal, along with the 'OK' to power the fuel pump and glow plugs. So if that is not producing a signal, it won't start for those several reasons.
The '02 manual that I have (which doesn't give too much info about the diesel, unfortunately) shows the sensor to have 2 'signal' wires and one ground wire, which is different from that used on the gasoline versions which instead have a single signal wire, an 8V supply wire and a ground wire. So I am not sure what the signals should 'look' like with such a set up. The signal wires are a twisted pair going to pins 43 and 24 of the pcm and the ground is on pin 42. You could try probing those wires with fine pins at the pcm plug and then put a voltmeter across them in various permuatations while you turn the crankshaft by hand using a socket on the crank pulley bolt and of course with the ignition 'on'. You should get voltage pulses from one arrangement or the other of you voltmeter as you turn the crank. If you can't get any pulsing then:
But with a new sensor installed (which I assume is for the diesel setup, correct?) my suspicion is that it was not installed with the tip of the sensor pressed against the flywheel which it is supposed to 'sense' the rotation of. Try loosening the screw of the sensor and push the sensor further inward until you 'feel' the tip touch a hard surface, then hold it there and tighten down the screw to hold it in that place. The new sensor comes with a paper spacer in place that is designed to be 'sacrificed' as the flywheel rotates, leaving the tip of the sensor at just the necessary spacing to produce the pulse but not so close as to damage the tip of the sensor due to scraping against the surface. If by chance the paper was removed and then it was installed against the surface it may have been damaged. If you aren't sure, see at the parts counter if they have a spacer you can install, remove the senosor, put on the new spacer, then re-install as I described above.
See if that solves the problem.
