Chrysler Repair: 1995 Chrysler NY heater and fan come on by themselves, auto temp, palm of my hand

Question
Hi!
I've got a 1995 Chrysler NY. The heater and heater fan come on intermittently and will not shut off. They blow hot air and out of just the front vents so you have hot air blowing right on you. Sometimes if I push all the buttons or use the palm of my hand to smack it, it will shut off. I've replaced the panel with all the buttons on and it still does the same thing. Is there something simple that will fix this or do I need to bring it in to a repair shop?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Carol,
Do you have the automatic temp type control or the conventional control type? If it is the auto temp control type then I suspect that the blower coming on uncontrollably is not due to the control panel but rather due to the blower motor 'power module' which is a solid-state electronic device mounted in the HVAC housing's internal air duct nearby to the blower. Follow the wire from the blower motor to the module to find it. Then pull the plug and unscrew two screws to take it out of the ductwork. Getting a used one out of a wreck would be the least expensive way to get one.
The hot temp of the air may be due to the fact that you don't have the unit 'on' as far as the temp request is concerned or that may be a separate issue, but getting the blower back under control is the necessary first step. I would not beat on the unit any further.
