RV Repair: speedometer, tail shaft, palm of my hand

Question
I stored my 1985 Winnebago Elandon for 2 years and when I put it back on the road the speedometer was not working properly. It would register up to 40-45 mph but not accurately. The odometer was good and the speedometer was sticky, Any help?

Answer
Hi James:
If I remember right in 1985 the speedometer was a cable drive, you might have a look, easiest place is the drivers side of the transmission tail shaft. If it is a cable then you need to disconnect the connector at the back of the speedometer housing, it either screws or snaps in, take out the cable and lubricate it. I usually just put some regular lube grease in the palm of my hand and pull the cable through it. Put the cable back in and connect the fitting. If this does not correct the problem you may have to replace the speedometer head in the dash. I have seen very little trouble with the drive gear of the transmission. If there is a problem there the spedo will not work at all. If it is an electronic unit then I would change out the sender in the transmission tail shaft first. The electronic sender is in the same place, transmission tail shaft housing drivers side, but rather than a cable there is a plug and two wires. I am not sure when they made the change to electronic units. Good luck and good RVing.
