Chrysler Repair: error p0172/low idle when slowing to a stop, fuel pressure regulator, dodge caravan

Question
QUESTION: Kevin,
1998 dodge caravan 3.0l.  wants to die when coming to a stop. drops to about 1000rpms.  it did die once on me this morning.
ran some fuel cleaner,to no avail.  seems to run okay first 10minutes until it gets warmed up.  don't want to start throwing parts at it.

ANSWER: Hi Greg,
The powertrain manual suggest the following possibilities for the 0172 *fuel system too rich"
catalytic converter plugging up
pcm going bad
engine parts tolerances
injector stuck open
MAP sensor inaccurate
O2 sensor upstream inaccurate
Fuel pressure regulator
wiring harness/connectors

Not too helpful. One item I can suggest is the egr valve, which may be sticking ajar slightly and causing a miss (though it would usually cause a too lean mixture were that the case.
But check your egr and make sure the valve is closing tightly to a dead stop via the internal spring action. There is a slot in the valve stem that you can use with the tip of a screwdriver to move the stem and thus check its function. Spray some WD-40 on the stem where it enters the valve body to free up the action.

PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the "pool" to which it had been referred by the other expert, Kevin

QUESTION: Roland,
thanks for getting back to me.  I have been getting people telling me a bunch of different things to try.  One chrysler tech is telling me o2 sensor or egr valve, another is telling me transmission speed sensors, and I read about people throwing all these parts at it and not fixing it. my rpms actually drop to 500

Answer
Hi Greg,
It costs nothing to check the egr valve 'action' as I suggested, so do that first. What you describe is consisten with that being the cause.  It could also cause an 0172 code if it were stuck slightly ajar rather than not closing all the way, so give that a try.
