Chrysler Repair: 1992 New Yorker headlights flashing, headlamp bulbs, headlamp switch

Question
This problem is intermittent.  At times the headlights will start flashing off and on in about 2 to 3 second intervals.  When this is happening it does the same thing on high beam.  The car doesn't have an anti theft device.  The lamps do have covers that work properly.

Answer
Hi Randy,
The intermittent is probably in the voltage supply from the battery to the headlamp dimmer switch. The possibilities are:
fuse C (50 amp) in the power distribution box could be fatigued and have a subtle crack in it wire that opens and closes;
a Circuit Breaker, inside the headlamp switch proper, which may be fatigued and intermittently opening;
a flakey switch in the headlamp dimmer switch proper.

If the headlamp doors are following suit with the flashing headlamp bulbs, then I would think it is fuse C or the circuit breaker.  If the doors are stable, then I suspect the dimmer switch.
You can check the voltage output of fuse C when the headlamps start to flash to see if it is stable or not. If not, replace that fuse; if it is stable than check the light green wire at the headlamp switch when you have them 'on' and see if the voltage is stable when the flashing begins. If not, then the circuit breaker is faulty (which means replacing the switch); if it is stable then check the voltage output at fuses 3 or 4 in the box under the dash which, if flashing like the bulbs, would tell you the dimmer switch is the problem.
So this will help you to sort out the problem.
