Chrysler Repair: 1995 New Yorker stalls when slowing down, chrysler new yorker, torque converter

Question
Hello Roland:
My 1995 Chrysler New Yorker 3.5L engine has recently begun stalling during deceleration when it reaches about 20 kilometres
per hour. It starts immediately and otherwise runs smoothly.
I have tried to access codes using the key method, but so far only
code 55 is indicated. Plugs, fuel filter, wires and ignition module have been replaced over the past 18 months. Transmission
downshifting has been a little on the rough side for some time.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing the engine to stall?

Answer
Hi John,
Try shifting into neutral just before you get to 20 kmh. If that prevents the stall then I suspect that the torque converter lock up clutch is not releasing as it should. Similarly, if you have not reached 50 or so kmh since last being stopped, the the lock-up will not have occurred and thus it should not stall all the way to stop. Otherwise, I would suspect the egr valve is hanging up ajar, except that you say it starts up well, which it shouldn't do if that were the cause of the stall.
Let me know what you learn, please.
Roland
