Answer
Hi Maverick,
I am not certain exactly what has happened other than the parking 'pawl' must have been damaged which probably produced debris which then clogged the hydraulic system and caused the inability of the clutches that operate in the other gears to activate. It may be that by draining out and flushing the entire hydraulic system of the debris and perhaps cleaning out or replacing the solenoid pack which is where all the hydaulic fluid system is controlled by debris-sensitive parts (which can be done without removing and dismantling the transmission) that the function can be restored. I would call around to independent transmission repair shops (not nationwide chain-type which are going to encourage you to replace the entire trans) to see if they believe there is any possibility of remediating the situation short of a replacement transmission.
Please let me know what you learn and how it works out.
Roland
PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it had been referred by the other expert. Please 'rate' my answer, and where you see the question about 'volunteer of the month' please consider a 'yes' if you find my effort helpful.
