Chrysler Repair: 97 T own and Country: dies then recovers, digit code number, independent garages

Question
keeps cutting off, even when am driving. then it might start back or not.

Answer
Hi Theresa.
This sounds very much like one of the two engine rotational position sensors is breaking down when it gets warmed up, then recovers when it cools down. It is possible that the engine computer has noticed this and stored in its memory a coded number (fault code) which says which sensor is failing. In the '96-7 model year things where changing so I can give you two ideas for getting the code: turn the ignition key 'on-off-on-off-on and leave on', doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it start to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Then write me back with a listing of the counts in the order of appearance. The last two sets of counts will be 5 in each which is the code for 'end of code readout'.
If the flashing doesn't work, then go to an Autozone parts store and get a code readout using a reader that plugs into a socket under the dash by the steering column, for free. If you don't have such a parts store nearby, then most independent garages will do the readout for under $40.
Ask for the 4-digit code number and ask what it means. Then write back and tell me and we'll go from there. The sensors cost about $50 at a parts store and are fairly easy to replace yourself. Tell me which size engine (L) that you have.
