Chrysler Repair: Sebring Air Conditioner ineffective, r 134a refrigerant, ambient temp

Question
Hello Mr Finston. I have an '02 Sebring sedan with the 2.4,  4 cyl.engine.
The air conditioner blows cold air when the ambient temp is around 60 degrees and lower. Temps above that and it blows warm air. Do you know what the problem could be? Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Steve,
It may be simply that the charge of refrigerant in the air conditioning system is lower than necessary to operate effectively, or it could even be that it is so low that the switch that senses too low a pressure is defeating the operation of the compressor. I would begin with that assumption and have that checked out at an AC shop. Or if money is tight, check to verify whether the compressor comes on when you ask for AC (you will hear the compressor in the engine comparment) and if it doesn't then the most likely cause is too low a level of refriegerant. You could buy a 12 oz container of R-134a refrigerant and an adapter kit with instructions on how to load that amount into the system.
