Chrysler Repair: 96 Sebring: speedo/tach/ shifting into reverse, independent repair, code numbers

Question
I have a 1996 Sebring Convertible. I can sit with the car in neutral and the engine will idle up and down and my speedometer goes from 0-to about 15mph while I am sitting still. It does not do this all the time. Other times my tach won't work till I restart the car. Still, there are times the car won't go into reverse unless I take it down to first and then up to reverse and it works fine. It is an automatic.

I am thinking of getting rid of the car unless I can figure out what is going on.

Answer
Hi Dan,
Those symptoms are not common so I don't have any specific suggestions as to what is wrong. However the communication about the speed and tach reading is digital in nature and is shared around the vehicle on the "digital data bus" which is centered in the body computer. So the problem could be in that system. I doubt it is an issue with the transmission.
On the shifting in reverese problem that too might have been diagnosed and converted to a fault code which is shared over the digital system. Hy suggestion would be to go to Autozone parts store and ask for a free fault code readout and if that is not convenient go to an independent repair shop where they will give you the 4-digit fault code numbers. Tell me what they are and we can go from there to decide what to do next.
