Chrysler Repair: Engine starts, stalls 3 or 4 times when cold, 4 digit numbers, coolant temp

Question
QUESTION: 2006 Chrysler Sebring 2.4L  4 cyl
When cold, takes 3 or 4 times to get motor to stay started.  Starts and then immediately stalls.  Once started it runs fine and starts easily for the next hours.  Same problem at 5% F as at 50 % F.
I have read things like  Idle speed control, temperature sensor, MAP sensor and oxygen sensor.  I have not tried anything yet.

ANSWER: Hi Russ,
I would try to get the fault codes that may be stored in the controller memory. An Autozone parts store may do that for free or an independent shop for under $40. Let me know of any 4-digit codes you find and we'll go from there. You might instead try the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave in" doing that 5 seconds or less elapased time. Then watch the odometer window to see if any 4 digit numbers are shown. The code will be the best way to approach the diagnosis.

PS Sorry for the delay but I just found your question in the pool to which it had been referred by the other expert.

QUESTION: There was a fault code stored, but we think it is not related.  It was P1607.  I will try the method you suggested.  I dont have the car here so may take a few days.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Russ,
That code depends upon a properly functioning coolant temp sensor. That being the case I would suggest that you check the resistance of your coolant temp sensor which should be in the range of 3-4,000 ohms when the engine is cold. If it is significantly lower than that I would replace the sensor. You might also want to check the egr valve funstion to see that the stem moves freely and is not sticking slightly ajar which leans the system to much to support an idle. You could spray the stem with WD-40 where it enters the valve body and work the stem via the slot in its stem, back and forth, to free-up  the action.
