Chrysler Repair: 96 T & C: no start, but have spark/fuel, chrysler town and country, exhaust gas recirculation valve

Question
I have a 1996 chrysler town and country, it cranks over and will almost start but dies instantly. it has plenty of fuel pressure and has spark during crank please help

Answer
Hi Bill,
It sounds like a mixture issue, since you have spark. I would try the ignition switch to get any fault codes stored in the engine computer: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on", doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the process to verify an accurate set of flash counts. Then write back with a follow-up question and tell me the results. Also, tell me which size engine you have. If you only get two sets of flashes with 5 in each, that means there are no fault codes in which case I would take a look at the exhaust gas recirculation valve to see if the stem is stuck with the valve slightly ajar which will lean the mixture too much for idle to occur. I can tell you the details if I know the engine.
