Chrysler Repair: 91 New Yorker, odometer doesnt work, dodge dynasty, speedo needle

Question
QUESTION: Roland
my 1991 Dodge Dynasty is giving me a code 62 what is this code
and is it big trouble or not

ANSWER: Hi Bill,
That is an interesting code to be found in a '91 vehicle because it appears that it came into existence in the '92 model. It says that the electronic mileage reading of the odometer which is supposed to be stored in the body controller memory for warranty purposes was not successfully accomplished. The '91 Chrysler manual doesn't list a code 62, but it is listed in the '92 manual. At this point in time the code is 'moot' unless it is preventing you from passing some sort of inspection. The presence of the code should not affect the operation of the vehicle. Perhaps somewhere in the past either the body controller/engine controller was replaced without regard to the year model?
That is my conclusion about this code in your car.

QUESTION: Roland I did notice my odometer is not working for distance and sometimes
speed indicator is showing faster than i seem to be going is this all
electronic or driven by a cable  I have the 3.3L v-6 auto Trans.

Answer
Hi Bill,
The speedo/odo is electrically driven by pulses that come from a electrro/mechanical 'distance sensor' that is geared to the right side half-axle output shaft of the transmission extension housing. The data pulses go by wire to the trans controller, the engine controller and the speedo/odo in the instrument cluster. In the cluster the pulses are used to drive the speedo needle and to regulate the rotation of an odometer motor that runs the gears that move the mileage and trip readouts. When the speedo works and the odo doesn't that means that a very small 20-tooth gear on the output shaft of the odomoter has lost a tooth which stops the motion of the odo readout.
In the past monnth I replaced the gear in my '89 LeBaron cluster, successfully, using a procedure that you can find at the Yahoo Autos group called The Chrysler LeBaron Club, http://autos.groups.yahoo.com./group/thechryslerlebaronclub/message/33980
I was able to buy the gear at a local odometer repair shop for $20 but you can also buy them at odometergears.com
The replacement follows the instruction except that after you remove the 7 screws that hold together the two clear plastic housings you don't do any more disassembly, rather you separate the housings only enough to give you access to the odometer motor for removal of its two screws and then replacement of the gear on its shaft. (You otherwise might think that you have to remove the speedo needle and fully separate the housings but that is not needed nor adviseable). It requires dexterity and patience so take your time.
I can't comment about the perceived inaccuracy of the speedo as I don't know why that would be the case intermittently. It may be a glitch that you have to live with.
My belief is that if your vehicle is indeed a '01 which would have the letter M in the 9th position of the VIN, that 62 code is not relevant and probably not related to the odometer gear issue. So verify the M to be the case. After '91 the odometer was totally electronic as far as I know though it still uses the speed sensor pulsing, it just doesn't have a gear-driven odometer.

PPS Thanks for the rating of my first answer and for confirming that there was a changeout of the computer which would explain the code. By the way, you are welcome to 'rate' this answer as well.
