Chrysler Repair: 99 Sebring power windows, rear defogger, fuse box

Question
here is an interesting one. my 99 sebring will not drop or raise the windows suddenly. i had an intermittent problem with the driver side window  before and figured the switch had just worn out, so i replaced it with a switch from the local dealer. this was a job in itself because the one needed was from a split model year run so there're 3 different types for this car. i should mention that when you activate the window switches either up or down the activation light for the rear defogger comes on as if the thing was being turned on. it looks like a bad ground indication but where do i find by best shot at repair of this problem summers coming on quick. gotta have the baby ready to go

Answer
thHi Bill,
The power for the the windows and the the defogger are isolated from one another. But your theory of a ground fault is worth looking into because both systems share a common ground point on a bolt that is just in front of the driver side door opening, about half way up from the floor on what is called the 'cowl' or kick panel. A lot of curcuits ground there and the nut is given a torque spec of 55 inch-pounds so it must be important. I would check that out, clean up the ground connectors and tighten it up. The power for the window is coming from circuit breaker No. 2 in the fuse box behind the left end-cap of the dash, just above the diagonal edge, the rear one of the two breakers. One or the other item must be involved for a 'no go' situation, assuming the switch is OK.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the generous rating and the nomination. On the cricuit breaker, if you can contact the connections to it one side should be hot in the run position of the ignition switch (pin 38) and the breaker should put the 12V voltage through to pin 37. It goes from there through a disconnect at the door hinge to pin 1 of the main window operating switch. Pin 10 at the switch has the black ground wire for the system that goes to ground point on the cowl via the same connection at the hinge. I hope you find the cause of the problem.
