Chrysler Repair: 99 LHS speed sensor replacement, sensor replacement, speed senser

Question
My check engine light is on i hook my car up to a computer to see the problem and it said it was the speed senser. When the car is drivin for a long period of time the check engine light starts to blind. The car doesnt like to go into its changing of gears. The RPM have trouble getting to 3 and it wont go highter than it usally stays at 3 RPM. So my question to you is do you think that sounds like the speed senser and if so what the standing price to get that fix in the state of washington.

Answer
Hi Bobbi,
The codes are usually accurate and the problem with gear shifting is a sign of a problem that could well be due to the output speed sensor of the transmission failing. The sensor itself is less than $100 for the part and the installation is quick: detach the plug after gently lifting the release tab on its edge, unscrew the old sensor, screw in the new sensor, reattach the plug. It is located at the rear end of the transmission on the driver side, about midway height. Tighten it to about the same torque as a spark plug (15-22 foot-pounds). If you buy the part at a store (shop around for the best price) and then take it to a mechanic, the labor time should be about 30 minutes, I guess. The rpm not going above 3,000 may be due to a different problem but replace the speed sensor first and see whether that goes away or not.
