Chrysler Repair: Stalling while driving: 96, dodge caravan, code translator

Question
Hello Kevin, I have a 1996 Dodge Caravan 3.3 liter engine. I am having stalling problems. I thought it was the Idle sensor(replaced), but when the mechanic put his computer on it, it said EGR valve malfunction. Replaced EGR valve, still having the same problem. I will be driving along fine when out of the blue the van will start sputering thn just stall. Sometimes after a hour or so im able to drive it, but than others i have to wait a whole day. I need your help with this before i spend more money a system checks and towing.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Joseph,
Because this is a '96 model it should be capable of giving you a fault code readout by means of the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, the repeat the process to assure an accurate set of flash counts. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the 2-digit fault code numbers. Then let me know the results and we'll go from there. You can get a code translator at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
It could be something subtle, such as a sensor that is off-value but not so much as to set a code, or a failing sensor that repairs itself when it cools down. So let us hope for codes other than a '55' which means simply 'end of readout'.

PS I saw your question in the pool to which it had been referred. I'm on vacation but getting back into action gradually.
