Chrysler Repair: Alternator code 41:93 V-6, chrysler le baron, postal mail

Question
I have a 93 Chrysler Le baron, 3.0 L V-6. My alternator quits after a few minutes. I have a fully charged battery. After about two minutes the alternator stops charging the battery and sends a code 41 which is "charging system circuit not responding to control signal". I have taken the alternator to AutoZone and have had them check it. On there system the alternator passes the test and comes back saying that there is no problem. Yet whenever the car is idling for a few minutes the alternator stops charging. Could it still be the alternator? or is there something possibly wrong with the SBEC Module. I have been having this problem for some time. I have tested all that I can think to test and at the end of my rope. Thank you for your time and answer.

Answer
Hi Bobby,
The title of the code is also "generator field not switching properly". It could be the generator field coils are flaky or the internal wiring of the rotor/commutator could be open/shorted or the SBEC could be the fault.  There are 6 pages in the powertrain diagnostic procedure manual for the V-6 engine ('93-5) that I have which I can xerox copy and postal mail to you. It is a step-by-step procedure which should lead you to the proper conclusion. If you would like those please tell me a postal mailing address and I'll put them in the mail to you. I believe that would be the most efficient way to get this information to you.

PS: If you have verified the wiring to be good and the failure occurs after running the motor for a few minutes I would suspect that the alternator is failing. A rebuilt one should cost in the range of $100 and that might be the most likely solution, though I suppose the SBEC could similarly be flaky. In my experience however it usually is the alternator.
