Chrysler Repair: 1972 DODGE DART: backfiring, chrysler owner, dodge dart

Question
QUESTION: I HAVE A 1972 318CI. IT WAS RUNNING PERFECTLY AND WHILE DRIVING I STARTED HEARING BACKFIRING WHEN ACCELERATING. I HEAR IT POPPING THROUGH THE CARBURETOR WHEN I PUNCH THE GAS OR RUN AT OVER 2500 RPM'S IT RUNS SMOOTH AND QUIET UNDER NORMAL LOAD. I TUNED UP ENGINE 3000 MILES AGO WITH NEW COIL, WIRES,PLUGS CAP AND ROTOR ALSO A NEW BATTERY AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR. IT DID THIS ONCE BEFORE BUT I INSTALLED A NEW (REMAN) CARBURETOR AND IT WENT AWAY FOR A FEW THOUSAND MILES AND NOW THE BACKFIRING IS BACK.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION.

ANSWER: Hi Daniel,
Power to you for staying in the technology! I wonder if the automatic choke might be sticking near closed position which makes it too rich and punching on the pedal makes it even worse.
So try lubbing its linkage as the first response. Unfortunately there are no self-diagnostics on board so we have to use our brains!

QUESTION: Being in southern california i have removed the choke. The flap is gone and it goes right through. Is it a timing issue or is it a fuel mixture issue? Thank you again!

Answer
Hi Daniel,
It could be either...
I would check the vacuum line to the distributor and also if you have a timing light why not see where it stands at curb idle and then see if the distributor plate is retarding responsively when you flick on the throttle.
For mixture, you might think about the float level being too high.
You could also verify that you are getting an extra shot of fuel in the carb throat when you gun it quickly
