Chrysler Repair: 98 sebring transmission install, support fixture, flex joint

Question
Hello Roland, I have read many of your tech responses, and you have always had some great answers. So here is my problem- 98 sebring convert.  a604 trans, I got the old one pulled out, but cant seem to get new one back in. It keeps catching on the frame./ About 1 inch is all i need. I am installing from the bottom of the car. Do i need to un do the engine and slide it back a few inches for clearance?? Or do i need to spin the transmission around to install? Just does not seem to be enough room for a straight up  install.  Thanks Keith

Answer
Hi Keith,
My '00 manual lists a number of steps involved in removal (install is the reverse) which you may not have had to do to remove it, but now are needed to get it back in. The entire list is 31 steps so I will just mention in order those that are related to the mechanicals:
The exhaust flex joint must be disconnected anytime the engine is lowered.
Remove bolts securing exhaust flex joint to exhaust maifold. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
Remove upper left transaxle mount bolt (another of those bolts was removed earlier).
Remove oil filter from engine
Remove starter and wiring
Remove front motor mount bracket (this assumes that you earlier installed engine support fixture)
Remove rear mount bracket through-bolt
Remove rear mount bracket bolts and remove rear motor mount
Remove lower radiator cross member
Remove lateral bending strut brackets (front and rear)
.....
Loosen right side steering gear bolts. Loosen right side k-frame bolts
Remove left side steering gear bolts. Remove left side k-frame bolts
Remove sway bar mounts
Position trans jack and support with chain
Remove upper and lower transaxle bell housing bolts
Move k-frame rearward and carefull lower trans from vehicle.

It thus appears that you got it out somehow without doing some of these steps which now may be necessary to get it back in, unfortunately. Best of luck with the job.
Roland
